If I had the wings of a ……..parrot
Well the most eagerly anticipated game of the season to date arrived and with it the pressure on our under fire manager was clearly evident to see. Cruelly robbed of the services of Owen to yet another hamstring injury (what is it with modern day footballers…cracked eyelashes, bad blisters, time of the month etc ….about time our physio’s and fitness coaches earned their corn, after all what do we employ them for??), Souness was forced to field Ameobi upfront to partner Shearer. All of the pre-match talk was on how ineffective he had become over recent months so despite playing the peg sellers, some doubt was creeping in about our ability to score the goals.

On the positive side however, the side was buoyed by the return of Solano …..

“We love you Nobby because you’re from Peru ……..
And the return to fitness of Emre after a 4 week layoff due to hamstring. Was the boy up for it having experienced the passion of the Milan derbies? On a positive note also, Souness decided to blood young Ramage into his first derby …..could have been a risky decision but any young player with a bit of talent who turns up with passion and desire for the shirt week in week out deserves a regular slot….Babayaro take note!

Into the game, Whitehead showed their game plan within 60 seconds cleaning Emre out from behind which could have warranted red but escaped with a yellow. Fortunately the wee man is no soft sh!te and got up immediately to get on with business…nice to see from a foreigner, however McCarthy’s plan was clear….hit them hard and complete for every ball.
The toon soon settled into a rhythm and stretched the unwashed with both Nobby and Emre pulling the strings. Davis saved well from Emre and Shola with the latter proving a handful for their defence. Cue The moment…corner from Emre…superb movement in the box by our lads (f!ck sake about time… could it have been rehearsed??) And Shola powered a header beyond Davis despairing dive…GET INNNNNNN!!!

Now once you have scored you are often at your most vulnerable…who from our midfield set out to win the ball back immediately from kick-off…answer NOBODY!! Up field they stroll …few passes and whack…in the back of the net past Shay who possibly could have done better. Back to square one…but to our boys respect, back we came and when Charlie kept alive Emre’s cross, hooking it back across goal, Shola bent his neck around Caldwell who under pressure headed into his own goal….GET INNNNNNN! Once a Geordie always a Geordie???
Unfortunately, back they came Elliott rode through a tackle from Parker, turned Boumsong inside out and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner past Shay. Great strike but what was our French International doing??? About time he started to focus or he could be facing a spell on the sidelines…if Souness has the bottle to do it??

So half time arrives and it is 2-2 which was unbelievable given the chances we had enjoyed, compared to the 2 speculative strikes that the peg sellers had ..so they were definitely fortunate to still be in the game.

Come the second half…they came at us a bit more and enjoyed a little more possession. Taylor however was outstanding…(world cup outside chance??) and ably supported by Ramage and to a certain extent Carr who proceeded to kick lumps out of anything that moved! Now here comes my moan….Arca, quite clearly potentially their best player starts to get involved yet he is just back from a toe injury that forced him to start from the bench. So who is going to clatter him …after all he only has 2 feet!!! Does not take a genius to work out, 2 well placed yet badly timed tackles from 2 different players would have fcked his game…but no we are too nice. Bollocks smash the little Argentinian tw@t.. Stamp on his feet at throw in’s or corners let the b@stard know he is in a game!!!
Then comes the moment..free kick to us 25 yards out with Shearer, Nobby and Emre standing over it. The little chap steps up and curls a delightful shot in off the post….instant fame secured for life! He then celebrates with our boss which shows obvious respect for the gaffer….more importantly did you see Michael’s reaction from the stands..leaping about with his children delighted we scored…careful now don’t fck your other leg!! Obviously as promised Emre was up for the game and boy did he contribute

The rest of the game was hearts in the mouth stuff…..penalty denied for a clumsy tackle by Charlie although when viewed at normal speed it looked to be OK. Taylor denied by a great save from Davis … the Elliot clean through the centre of our defence…where was Boumsong….answers on a postcard please….lobs Shay hits the bar and bounces out. There was still time for one stupendous clearance from Taylor denying a certain goal before the ground erupted at the final whistle.

Three points to us and a game we would have lost weeks ago

So on the positive

Shola scoring goals
Steven Taylor
Ramage
Emre (still have not seen the best of this kid yet but looks a class act)
Steven Taylor
Return of Nobby
Did I mention Steven Taylor??

Negatives

Boumsong’s loss of form
Failure to show again by Babayaro….get rid
Dare I say it but big Al looked well out of touch….maybe the hernia rumours??
The day then deteriorated into a drink fuelled celebration GET INNNNNNNN nowt more important than beating the unwashed!!!

First bragging rights to us, now can we start getting players fit and win some games starting with Grimsby followed by West Brom. What a perfect opportunity to get some confidence into the team and start to progress to the next level

COME ONNNNNN N!!!
