Onto Wednesday and a league cup tie against Wigan who were to rest nine players and play a midfielder up front, in anticipation of a season which will surely now become little more than a very quick descent down the Premier League. Souness elected to play his strongest side, which included his multi - million pound signings, Luque, Emre, Parker and Boumsong. Unfortunately most of the team thought that all they had to do was turn up.
The first half performance was as bad as anything I have seen, with Wigan reserves having around 12 corners and 9 shots on target. Once again Shay kept us in the game. The second half saw a slight improvement with a couple of spells over the half way line and Emre and Solano going close.
Eventually we were put out of our misery with Wigan getting a soft penalty late on, which of course they converted. I for one have to admit to slight feelings of relief as I did not fancy watching another half-hour of this dross followed by a penalty shoot out defeat.
In-between Sunday and Wednesday, Me, Jonny, the Twins and thousands of others spent around 11 hours travelling and £40 odd on tickets. We saw a team with no shape; passion or commitment create next to nothing not once but twice. There must have been around 5000 mags at Wigan and the players let us down, they appear not to give a toss. I for one am sick of reading their apologies and excuses in the chronicle. This competition was our only realistic chance of playing in Europe and they let it go without a fight, but then maybe a lot of them don’t think they’ll be here next season.
