We took the lead as early as the 2nd minute when Milner laid the ball back to N'Zogbia who sent over a cross that Viduka met with a superb header to thunder past Green into the bottom corner of the Leazes net. Shortly after the half hour mark West Ham equalised when Cole flicked the ball in and Ashton crashed the ball past Harper with a hip-high volley. However we managed to restore the lead before half time when N'Zogbia latched on to a Rozehnal clearance and beat Bowyer to again provide the perfect cross from the left. Viduka converted - although the big striker almost missed it, the ball going on off both shins. N’Zogbia secured the three points although he looked to have done too much down by the byline but was still able to squeeze the ball across the six yard area from the left for N'Zogbia to tucked home.
While we improved as the afternoon wore on, things really clicked into place in the latter stages when players adopted natural rather than assigned roles - Smith looking far happier when reinstated to an advanced central role and Zog having the legs to set the crowd roaring as he burst forward on the counter-attack.
