Tonight saw our lowest crowd at St James' since promotion to the top flight in 1993; 20,577, although it was initially announced as 19,743. There were tales of season ticket holders with the direct debut scheme for cup games being turned away; another great example of how not to treat fans.
Spurs came to Tyneside defending the Trophy they won last year, and although they're bottom of the league at the moment, they had a better attitude and team spirit than those in black and white stripes.
Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring on 62 mins after a cross from the left and 4 mins later O'Hara made it 2-0 after some disastrous defending from Taylor.
For the second game running Owen scored a conciliation goal on 90 mins, however the frantic couple of extra minutes didn't result in an equaliser.
Two rumours developed tonight;
Did we expect to win The Carling Cup this year?
Not with the current climate.
