Manure Away

Despite our $hite record I’ve always had a soft spot for the League Cup (you’ve got to be of a certain age to remember it being called that). It’s possibly the happy memories of my trip to Wembley as 10 year old (despite the defeat), or the visits to places like Bradford, Oxford, Mansfield, Tranmere, Orient and more recently, Accrington Stanley on a lousy mid-week night that has cemented my fondness.

Each year, usually just before the draw is made, I become hugely optimistic because, since that final in 1976, I’ve always felt that this is our best opportunity to win a trophy. After all Cardiff, Birmingham, Villa, Spurs, Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, the smoggies, Leicester and Tranmere have all reached the final since the turn of the century.

Also, prior to the draw Pardew had said he was going to prioritise this competition this season....then we draw Manure away!!! Suppose there’s always next year!!

Last night there’d been a great turn out for Blakey’s 80th at The Club. Whiskey, Beer, Pie & Peas: Beat came prepared.....with the Gaviscon!! John produced a sterling effort by scouring the North East (in the most horrendous weather) to provide an XXL Toon top with ‘Blakey, 80’ on the back!
Congratulations Ian!!

To be fair we more than held our own tonight and we had some great chances and their second goal came against the run of play. Despite the defeat there were numerous ‘plus points’....
  • Tavernier looked comfortable.
  • The substitutes had an immediate impact for the goal.
  • Cisse scored, hopefully that can kick start his season.
  • Ameobi had a good game (hopfully he’ll hit top form around 21st October).
Gosling missed a good chance. We had plenty of the ball and at times looked as good as them. Cisse hit the bar in injury time with an exquisite overhead kick. We looked very dangerous from corners (for a change) and free kicks. It was good to see Coloccini back in action. Tiote got booked, was replaced by his younger brother, who in turn got booked. Obertan should retire right now!!
I hate Manure!!
