I have to admit that Calum has dragged me along to the last couple of Europa League matches, and to be honest paying £20 for both of us to get in, it’s a little difficult to argue against going when he’s badgering me to go. I suppose I should be glad he wants to go and take as a positive that he’s obviously getting bitten by the bug.

So, it was a choice of having some tea or dash up to the sporties to catch the bus – tea won, so we took the car through. Managed to get parked up Ok outside the Discovery museum and went to the cash turnstiles for the Gallowgate Upper Tier

When we got the tickets for row U, it wasn’t hard to work out that we were going to be near the back…didn’t realise exactly how near until we got there…very last row of the upper tier. View wasn’t bad, but it feels a bit surreal when you can’t see the away fans.

So to the match ….Brugge were neat and tidy, had a couple of nippy players, but were really the type of team that any tope class side would beat comfortably. The 4-3-3 system in the first half should have worked, but it didn’t. Whether that is because the players not following the manager’s instructions, picking the wrong players for that system, or whatever it was, it just didn’t work well at all.

Up front Cisse played through the middle with Obertan down one side and Sammy Ameobi down the other. But for me, both wide men were too wide all of the time, leaving Cisse isolated and trying to cover too much ground, so when most crosses came in Cisse was either by himself against 2 or 3 defenders, or not in the box at all as he’d dropped deep to lay the ball off.

The midfield didn’t work well either, Anita looked off the pace still, and Tiote seemed hell bent on giving the ball away….perhaps the red card last week got to him. Bigirimana was probably less effective than he has been, but there wasn’t anything creative from any of them.

Despite that Cisse had a couple chances which he should have took, and probably would have took last season.

After the break, Obertan scored after good work from Sammy, but the game never really sparked into life. The atmosphere in the ground seemed to match the playing on the pitch…. just doing enough, but no-one trying too hard.

Another win, and three points take us to 7 points and looking comfortable to qualify from the group. We will have to play better in both of the next two Europa League games in Bruges and Bordeaux, and I’m sure we will.

So, the last two games, away against the Mackems and at home vs Brugge… I’ve been in the very last row behind the goal – the difference this time…..won’t have to spend hours scrubbing with Coal Tar soap to get rid of the smell of cheesy chips.
