This is Newcastle United’s 18th European campaign.
Tonight is our 126th European game.
Just keep reminding the dirty makems of those two facts!!
The Ameobi brothers started together up front. Colloccini and Tiote – both suspended for Sunday’s visit of West Ham – also started along with first choice keeper Tim Krul. There were also starts for Anita, Williamson, Bigirimana, Obertan, Marveaux and Tavernier. I was slightly concerned after Tavernier’s performance in Greece last month, however Pardew revealed today that although he’s predominantly right footed, left back is his best position! We’ll see!!
Since we played them 2 weeks ago their manager; Georges Leekens had been sacked. Both sides had early chances and Marveaux had the best of the early chances but he failed to connect with Obertan’s low cross. Shortly afterwards Trickovski scored for the Belgians. They doubled their lead 5 mins later with a bizarre goal from Jorgenson. We were back in it 5 mins before the break with a beauty from Anita. He stuck a sweet volley from the edge of the box from a defensive header. We were in the ascendancy at this point and Shola put us level after he combined well with brother Sammy to the delight of over 2,000 Geordies. That was the end of the scoring.
The second half saw us survive some pressure from Brugge including back to back corners. Taylor, on for Williamson was lucky not to give away a penalty and Krul made 2 good saves to keep the scores even as Brugge finished the game strongly. Generally a draw was probably a fair result and means we remain unbeaten in Europe this season.
Another fact....we’ve scored as many goals in our last 3 European games as the dirty mackems have in their 9 league games!
